GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a deeply rooted issue in Uganda, affecting women, girls, and increasingly men and boys across all regions. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics and UNFPA, 22.3% of ever-married women have experienced physical violence from a partner, while 16.6% have faced sexual violence. In 2020 alone, Uganda recorded 90,489 GBV cases—a 9.8% increase from the previous year. Among these, 14,134 were defilement cases, with over 9,954 girls aged 15–17 affected. Domestic violence also surged by 29%, with 18,872 victims, the majority being women. These alarming figures underscore the urgent need for sustained, community-driven interventions.

PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) has developed a dynamic GBV Prevention Program that uses media and grassroots engagement to raise awareness, challenge harmful norms, and empower communities to take action. The program features a serialized radio drama (BAHEMUKA DRMA) that portrays real-life scenarios of abuse and recovery, promoting empathy, gender equality, and respectful relationships. Our Family Clinic Monday weekly live radio talk shows on Voice of Tooro 101 FM and Fort TV every Thursday 8:00-9:00pm host health professionals, legal experts, and community leaders to discuss GBV laws, survivor support, and prevention strategies, while allowing listeners to share experiences and ask questions.

In addition, PLANE conducts regular community outreach campaigns in villages, schools, and trading centers to educate the public, distribute materials, and offer counseling. Facilitated community dialogues bring together men, women, and youth to reflect on cultural practices, promote gender equity, and develop local action plans. Through this integrated approach, PLANE aims to reduce stigma, increase reporting, and foster a society free from violence and discrimination.
