Imagine raising five kids in a rundown house that barely keeps the rain
out, with empty stomachs and no money for school. This is the harsh
reality for Mama Mbabazi Gorretti, a 44-year-old single mother leaving
in Nyakabira village, North Division, Fort Portal Tourism City, Western
Uganda, whose strength and determination are being pushed to their
limits.
Her oldest daughter, now just 20, had to leave school at 16 because they
couldn’t afford the fees, and now she’s trying to raise her own child in
the same tough situation.
The younger kids are often sent home from school for not having the
essentials — books, pens, uniforms, and shoes. With each missed class,
their dreams of education fade a little more. The house they call home is
on the brink of falling apart.
At night, the children shiver from the cold and go to bed hungry. They
lack a proper latrine, safety, and the dignity that everyone deserves.
This isn’t just a story; it’s a rallying cry for help. African Sustainable
Journeys (ASJ) and PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) have visited
Mama Gorretti’s home and seen the heartbreaking situation up close.
Together, we’re launching a campaign to raise UGX 22 million ($6,000)
to build a safe, decent home and latrine for this family — a stepping
stone towards a brighter future.

A House for Hope: Help Mama Gorretti Rebuild Her Life
In the Nyakabira cell of North Division, Fort Portal Tourism City,
Western Uganda, Mama Gorretti, a 44-year-old single mother of five, is
living in a crumbling mud house. She has no pit latrine, no food, and
struggles to keep her children warm at night.
Her eldest daughter had to drop out of school at 16 and now faces the
challenge of raising her own child. The younger kids often get sent home
from school because they lack basic necessities like books, shoes, and
uniforms. Their future is looking bleak.
Mama Gorretti dreams of having a safe home, a roof that doesn’t leak,
and a life where her children can learn without feeling ashamed.
African Sustainable Journeys (ASJ) and PLATFORM for the NEEDY
(PLANE) have come together to launch a campaign aiming to raise
UGX 22 million ($6,000) to build her a proper house and latrine. You
